Why Do I need A VPN?

Being an Internet Manager on a cruise ship is a job I absolutely love. Not only do I get to travel the world and get paid for it but I also get to meet some very unique and interesting people along the way.

This week, I met a very special, young Apple Employee (i’m an Apple Cult Member) and along with all the obvious questions I put to him about the everyday running of the biggest company of the world, I happened to be thinking about getting a VPN but I was 50/50 for it and against it. I was swaying back and forth, reading everything (I have OCD) and asking Google for help me decide….so I asked him. ‘’Why do I need a VPN?’

By the time he stopped talking, I bought it within 5 minutes. I didn’t even think twice. In fact, I found myself questioning why I had any doubt.

5 Reasons Why You Should Have A VPN

  1. Security and Privacy are important. Your information passes between your hardware and the network’s hub. How can you be sure that the hotspot secures access to the wired side of its routers? You can’t without a VPN. Simple as that.
  1. Your bits (not those bits) pass across a Broadband modem and through intermediate points even if you’re using a secure Wi-Fi network at work or at home.
  1. If you’re like my friends on-board, you may be tempted to download illegal material occasionally. In this case, you really don’t want to be spied on. This can lead to being placed on someone’s ‘Hit-List’. We’ve all got those torrent apps on our laptops haven’t we? I once received a very angry letter from Sony many years ago threatening me to never download Michael Jackson again without paying for it. Better safe than trying to defend yourself in court or paying a massive fine for something you may or may not have even been guilty of.
  1. Location restricted material is a pain in the ‘you know what’. Who wants to wait for those apps and TV shows that, for some reason (it’s 2016 dammit) are only available in specific countries. This may not be on your list of ‘Things That Bother Me’ but it was on mine until I went all VPN savvy.
  1. Whether you are in a monitored environment or a completely free and open one, keep secure, keep away from prying eyes and help yourself sleep better knowing you are browsing safely.

Isn’t it amazing that we have all of this information on the Internet yet we are bamboozled with endless conflicting opinions?

Thankfully, Internet safety is now beyond dispute.
